Arbrix was established in 1985/6 to provide a forum
for Members to discuss current problems and experiences
relating to Arbitrations and Dispute Resolution; to
form associations with other similar groups; and to
hold meetings to further these objects. Its function
is to provide a vehicle for delivering relevant Continuing
Professional Development to all those involved with
dispute resolution in the property industry.
Members are Chartered Surveyors and others who have
attended special training courses, arranged or endorsed
by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors since
October 1985 for Arbitrators or Independent Experts
or other judicial or quasi judicial appointees for the
resolution of disputes and those on the Lord Chancellor’s
Panel for agricultural cases. Honorary Members are also
admitted.
Initially established under an informal
arrangement as “a club” the membership has
grown seven fold since its inception. The association
incorporated as ARBRIX Ltd a company limited by guarantee.
The day-to-day conference functions are managed through
it’s wholly owned subsidiary ARBRIX CONFERENCES
Ltd.
In January 2002 INDEX – the sister group of Independent
Experts merged with Arbrix.
The Association is formed by representative
sub groups of: -
- General Practice (mainly commercial Rent Review
and valuation)
- Construction
- Rural
- INDEX
- PACT
Each group delivers conferences dedicated
to their specialist market sector. In all there are
ordinarily 6 conferences annually at various locations
throughout the UK.
The strength of the Association lies in
its membership, currently in the region of 700 members.
Enormous input has been provided by many members who
have prepared and delivered papers (and never a fee
mentioned!), identified burning questions for discussion,
led syndicates and workshops, served on committee, organised
social events such as golf days and so on. Above all,
the “clubability” – friendship and
fraternity, good humour and sharing of concerns –
is the key to its success, whether past, present or
future.
The business of the Association is conducted
by a Committee of 14 members drawn from a cross section
of the representative groups and “the officers”.
